Letter From The Editor
In this issue, several of our feature articles focus on the
power of our minds, and how changing the way we look at the world changes our world. Long after all the feature articles
for this issue were submitted, I received confirmation of this Universal Law when I listened to this week’s edition of TED Talk Radio, titled “Nudge”. In this edition, Carol Dweck, Stanford psychology professor, designed experiments to find out how children responded to challenges. She gave 10 year olds problems that were slightly too hard for them. “Some of them reacted in
a shockingly positive way. The said things like ‘I love a challenge’. They understood that their abilities could be developed. They had what I call a ‘growth mindset’. But other students felt it was tragic, catastrophic. From their more fixed mindset prospective, their intelligence had been up for judgment and they failed.”
Carol explained that a Fixed Mindset is the idea that your talents and abilities are fixed; some people have a lot, and some people have less, and that’s just the way that it is always going to be. A Growth Mindset is the idea that talents and abilities can be developed by hard work, good strategies, and asking for help and input from others. Everyone can grow their abilities.
What creates a Growth or Fixed mindset? Rather than praising intelligence or talents, (your own or others), if you praise
effort and strategy, it puts the recipient of that praise into a growth mindset.
Carol explained that tying process to learning and outcome teaches kids they can grow their talents. This works equally well to change our own mindset and help us to move forward.

Carol poses this question, which we would all do well to
ask ourselves every time we face a difficult task or challenge: “Am I this fixed creature that has to look good all the time and validate myself. Or am I this dynamic, growing person who has an infinite, undetermined future I can work toward? Does this struggle and confusion mean I am dumb, or does it mean I am growing my brain, making new neural connection and getting strong?”
Carol says, and I agree, that these are two different worlds and we can choose which one we inhabit.
