reassuringly, it is common knowledge that college graduates have healthier lifestyles overall and live longer lives than non-college graduates.
So we know attending college is a good thing. But how do we decide which college to attend? How do we know we are making the right choice? Do we rely on fate or destiny? Is it all outside of our control?
Here are some tips to help you or a loved make a decision about college choice:
• Reflect on what attributes about the college are most important to you, i.e. location cost, academic program, prestige/reputation, family alumni connection.
• Visit as many college campuses as you can so you can get to know the college culture. Ask yourself how it feels being on that campus: What energy do you sense from walking around?
• Do you have a dream school, one you have close to your heart or from a wish list?
• Consider college as the next stage in your
life, a new beginning, a new frontier; you are a pioneer!
• Find out about special programs, services, or learning communities that will provide support for your situation, i.e. academic support, disabled student services, programs for students of color, military veterans, single parents, English Language Learners, etc.
• Keep a journal to write down questions, feelings, emotions, concerns, and thoughts about which you want to ask your guidance counselor or a representative from the university.
• Talk about your experience with friends and family who are supportive and encouraging you to pursue your dreams.
• Use social media, i.e. Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, & Twitter to learn more about the schools and to meet other incoming students.
The decision to attend college is a major life choice. But just like any other life choice,
success depends on the amount
of work, effort, energy, attention, understanding, and focus a person puts into the process. Even so, it also helps to remember that college is but one step on a thousand mile journey.
