A Conversation with Phyllis Bala Dr. of Indigenous Medicine
Recently, I sat down with Dr. of Indigenous Medicine, Phyllis Bala, to discuss her unique methods of working with nature and our ancestors, to help people heal themselves and find understanding
and peace amid life’s challenges.
by Stacey Leigh Mohr
Phyllis, you are the driving force behind Sacred Ground Community Resource Center in Occidental, where you
teach a Medicine Wheel Program, and you work with the ancestors and with nature. Your mission is to heal the earth and to heal people?
That is interesting that you said that. It’s really a great question because I avoid the word “healer” in my work, and I also avoid the word “healing”. If I identify myself as a healer, then sometimes people feel like they’re not [healers]. And so I don’t feel comfortable with that label. The way that I describe how I work with the ancestors is that I am an interpreter.
I was born seeing people inside of people. I didn’t
realize until I was in my forties this is not something
that everybody sees. When I read the book “The
Biology of Belief” by Bruce Lipton, and he described anthropomorphism as the personification of cells, for the first time I realized that what I was looking at in people was the personification of their cells, which are their ancestors. We come with a whole team!
You see their ancestors in their cell’s DNA?
Yes. They look like real people. They are very busy.
And you interpret for them, help them to see it for themselves, help them understand what’s going on?
Yes. Now I do this professionally. Before, I used to not say anything [about what I see]. Then when I was asked by the ancestors if I would do this work, my first answer was “No, absolutely not. If they have a message for their relative, they could do it themselves.” However, they did not take “no” for an answer, and they gave me a story which blew my heart open, and I couldn’t refuse. So now, I do this work professionally and mostly for medical purposes, because it can create medical interventions for people. They can have more options for what can happen for their well being when their ancestors are engaged.
And then you are able to help them?
Yes. I am listening to hear what is going on with the person’s mind, body, and spirit. And I listen to hear what the ancestor’s have to say. I listen to “the story”, and
sometimes the story comes like a jigsaw puzzle. Piecing
it all together, I come up with the whole picture of what
is happening. As I am learning the story, the ancestors become involved and are responding to my style of communication. When I speak to the ancestors, I am speaking from my heart in a way that is respectful. When
I do that, they are listening and responding from Heart Intelligence that is already embedded in each and every cell in their relative’s body systems.
I work with mitochondrial DNA, bone marrow, and stem cells, and the ancestors work with me to repair various systems in their relative’s body. I get to see that played out in medical imaging and medical tests.
So when you work with the patient’s ancestors, they are repairing the various systems of the body, and you then can see the results, you are saying, on bone scans and MRIs and X-rays? You see an improvement on these tests?
Yes. And oddly, what can also show up on X-rays is a person’s spiritual stance – the attitude someone is holding spiritually shows up in the position of his/her skeleton on the X ray. It is a little bit disturbing to see that. But it is also correctable. The way that I correct what is seen on the X ray is through prayer. The image on the X ray corrects itself, so we get to see the organ that was blocked by the position of the bones, and we can see the organs that need to be seen. That is how powerful our attitudes are.
We can cover things up, spiritually? And through prayer we can release them and they can be revealed?
Yes, and corrected it so it’s no longer an issue impacting a person’s physical body in a way that is disturbing.
You not only work with generations of ancestors, you have a remarkable way of working with Nature.
The Elders show up in Nature to me. Their Nature Body is
a stone or a mountain or a tree. But inside of that is a spirit that usually shows up to me as a Native American Elder, male or female. Sometimes it’s a combination of animal and plant. Sometimes it’s a human spirit in an animal. And always comes the story of how that person came to be part of the animal’s life.
