EAT LOVE LOCAL

It’s Tomato
Time!
Homegrown tomatoes in the summer may just be the best thing in the world!
Juicy, succulent, sweet morsels of goodness!
Many scrumptious varieties can be found at our local Farmers
Markets. The Patch is my personal favorite purveyor of home grown
tomatoes. I wait all year to find Lazaro’s booth to appear at the
Farmers Market at the Wells Fargo Center in Santa Rosa. I never fail to marvel at his luscious assortment of gorgeous tomatoes.
A simple and tasty recipe using fresh, homegrown tomatoes is Caprese Salad.
Using heirloom tomatoes, wash and slice tomatoes and set them in a strainer to drain excess juice. Lightly salt (still in strainer) and set them aside. Slice fresh mozzarella and chop fresh basil. Layer tomatoes and cheese on a platter, or toss in a bowl ,and sprinkle with basil. Sprinkle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Home grown summer tomatoes are perfect eaten raw and fresh. But they also make the best sauces and soups. Cooked dishes made with fresh, home grown summer tomatoes cannot be beat for depth of flavor and nutritional content, and require only the simplest of ingredients. No need to add sweeteners, and just a sprinkle of salt will do.
A great recipe for those ripe tomatoes is a simple tomato sauce. Lazaro recommends ‘shady ladies’ for cooking.
