Spirit in Business
by Aimèe Lyndon-Adams and Karen Halseth
Have you heard the saying “The shortest distance between two points is a straight line?” For many years, I pondered the principle of the straight line, hoping that if I found it, I would create the career of my dreams. The problem was, I had no idea what my dream
career would be. I watched and listened to others
as I attempted to find the key to this journey. I was completely baffled at how anyone could graduate from high school, have their college years all mapped out, (already knowing what their major would be), then move on to graduate school, all the while keeping their career goals clearly in mind, and following that straight line.
To say my career path did not follow a straight line makes me break out in hysterical laughter. The truth
is, I have never done anything the conventional way, although I longed for that magical conventional path. I did not have anyone to guide me to be my unique self, or to teach me to follow my intuition. Nor did anyone tell me that staying in one career wasn’t the only way to success. So I suffered with the underlying belief that I was doing it wrong.
Throughout my career I was highly valued in the many positions that I held. I was always promoted into upper management and made an excellent salary. However, all the while I wondered what could have been if I had been able to find that “straight line” career path. I was not yet able to value the diversified skill set that I had acquired. I continued to feel that I had not done it “right”.
Yet, I began to develop what I saw as my own
unique gifts and talents. I felt split in my corporate environment, which did not support sharing of intuition, or using internal guidance, but did expect one to keep one’s nose to the grindstone, and work 70 hours a week. I knew there had to be a better way.
Through focusing on my spiritual growth and what made me unique, both in business and as a woman, I DID find a better way. I began listening to my guidance, taking classes, and immersing myself in self-discovery courses. I followed visionaries that were sharing the same message of valuing one’s unique gifts.
I left structured employment 12 years ago. Many well-meaning friends said I was crazy. They told me that I needed to stay a bit longer, save more money, and make sure I was stable. But I knew one thing for sure; if I did not make a change very soon, I would become very sick. Just as I was pulling together all of my courage to give my notice, a card arrived in the mail with this message: “Sometimes the only mode of transportation available is a leap of faith.” That was all I needed to leap! Three months later I was an entrepreneur!
I realize now that all of my past experiences, (providing corporate level customer service, managing 3 separate medical clinics, owning a clothing business, working
as Assistant Manager of a Boutique Hotel and as Spa Director for two amazing properties), led me to, and prepared me for, my current business success.
I have, through my curvy career path, acquired a
skill set that assists me in managing every area of
my business. I am now the co-founder of What Truly Matters: Living Your Juiciest Life Ever! And, as I draw on many years of diverse experience, I am very grateful that I took the “curvy line to success”, and I want to offer encouragement and kudos to everyone who is also following that curvy path! You ARE doing it right!
