Brain Sharpening
Focusing Exercises for Your Best Year Yet!
The new year is upon us and many of us have great intentions; build your business, improve or find the perfect relationship, take up a new hobby, or improve your memory, just to name a few. Phew, that’s exhausting, and you haven’t really started yet.
The best strategy for beginning the new year and working towards the attainment of your goals is to learn how
to stay sharply focused on one intention at a time, and make use of the information you are taking in. Ever increasing demands on our attention makes that difficult. People often find themselves feeling scattered, which can undermine and compromise our results in many areas of life.
Exercising the brain is the key to focusing and staying focused. Much has been written about sharpening the brain, from computerized brain training to learning a new hobby, to meditation. For now, we will concentrate on clearing the mental clutter and focusing on one thing at a time. The best brain exercises for this help you break your routine and challenge you to use and develop new brain pathways.
Super Brain Yoga, a simple squatting exercise, is a great way to retrain your brain and grow new pathways. When we exercise the brain, we create more Synapses, points of connections in the brain, which are super important for brain health at any stage in life, and can reverse cognitive delays. It is also helpful for those of us with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Down Syndrome, or Alzheimer’s.
Try Super Brain Yoga for 3-5 minutes a day: to ensure you achieve maximum benefits:
1. Face East. For the elderly, face North.
2. Remove any jewelry and connect your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Leave it there throughout the exercise.
3. Take your left hand, cross your upper body to take hold of your right earlobe with thumb and forefinger. Make sure that the thumb is in front.
4. Now take your right hand across your upper body to take hold of your left earlobe. Again, make sure that
the thumb is in front. At this point you’re pressing both earlobes simultaneously. Make sure your left arm is close to your chest and inside your right arm.
5. Inhale through your nose and slowly squat down to the ground.
6. Hold your breath and exhale as you start making your way back up to a standing position.
7. Repeat this squatting action 14 times. Remember to keep holding your earlobes and to keep your tongue touching the roof of your mouth throughout the entire exercise.
Remember, when you exercise the brain, you are more likely to stay sharp and focused, so that you are able to learn, create, implement ideas, and following through. It’s also essential for managing stress and anxiety, tracking time and being able to stay on task so that we can reach our goals. Practice these tips to start the new year off right. This can be your best year yet!
