The Holidays are a time when many people overeat, indulging in less than healthy options. They rationalize that “it is the season”, and they will get back to their healthy lifestyle on January 1st. This overindulgence can cause unwanted weight gain and a general feeling of sluggishness and a lack of vitality. Well, since helping people feel better in their bodies is my specialty, I am pleased to offer the following tips to help you get back on track.
One of the most popular and effective ways of cleansing and
detoxifying the body is by going on a juice feast. This method of healing with freshly pressed vegetable and fruit juices was popularized in the film “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” by Joe Cross, in which Joe turned his health around and lost a substantial amount of weight by embarking on a 60-day juice fast.
I do not recommend the long term fasts that he
advocates, but personally feel that anywhere from a
couple of days to a week of juice feasting is adequate
to reset the body to a healthier state after too many indulgences. If you are dealing with serious illness however, longer periods of fasting may be in your favor. Many well respected healing centers such as the Gerson Institute, Hippocrates Health Institute and Optimum Health Institute all advocate juice fasting for reversing illnesses as serious as cancer, so imagine the overall health benefits of consuming large quantities of concentrated nutrients for whatever length of time you devote to it. Just be sure the juice is freshly made or cold pressed (not pasteurized, as the nutrients will have been compromised). I am including some of my favorite juice recipes in this issue. I recommend using a masticating juicer verses a centrifugal juicer, as more nutrients are preserved and less heat produced (a source of oxidation) with the masticating juicer.
